Just purchased a box of the new Gripping Beast plastic Vikings (44 for £18 - what a steal ) I plan on turning them into Dunlendings and Rohirim. I also purchased a pack of these and a pack of these and this guy to go with them.


My club are thinking about running a demo day, so I thought it'd be nice use it as an excuse to buy some stuff. For a LotR demo (if we do do the day), I'm planning on having a Rohan vs Dunland battle. My plans are to use some of the plastic Vikings as Helmlingas and the archers as dismounted Outriders, while the rest of the plastic Vikings will become Dunlending warriors. I also plan on finishing off painting the resin turf fort I bought ages ago and making a palisade for it out of cocktail sticks.

What I'm think of at the moment is having a 200-250pts Rohan army defending and a 300-350pts Dunland army attacking. Fluffwise, it'll be set in the reigh of Folcwine who drove the Dunlendings out of the Westmarch. The story behind it will be Folcwine has been wounded and has retreated to a nearby fort (I say fort, what I mean is settlement protected by an enbankment with a fence ontop). The Dunlendings are trying to break in and kill him before re-inforcements arrive. Objective is the Dulendings have 10 turns to getin and break into the king's hut. The defenders have to stop that happening (at the end of turn 10, the reinforcements arrive and the dunlendings have to retreat.

So, what do you guys think of the scenario?

Nice Dinadan, although the only one I personally like there is the Dunlending King (who if you look closely looks exactly like Gibbs off of Pirates of the Carribean! - in that picture anyway).

Never noticed that before, but now that you mention it...


After having put together some of the plastics, I must say that it is a nice kit I'd definately recomend it for anyone who wants a cheap Dunlending army or anyone making a Dunland/Rohan army for WotR (44 minis for £18 is ludicrouly cheap next to GW's prices, especially as it's a multi-part kit and has enough bits to make two of them into chieftains and two into hornblowers).

The resemblance is uncanny.

I might even buy some of them Dunlendings actually, 44 for £18 is unresistable.

I look forward to seeing where you go with these.

Looks good but to me they're maybe a little too similar? Maybe in different schemes they'll look distinct enough. Shame that Gibbs has fur all over him, I want to use that for a Corsair army now

since posting the above pics, I've added horse-hair plumes to the Rohirim to help differentiate them. I plan on having them in different colour schemes aswell - green and brown for the Rohirim and blue or red for the Dunlendings.

No reason you can't - just say that your theme is that his ship got lost and ended up in Forochel in the far north

Green is the more traditional Rohan colour although red also looks quite nice. Fair bit of leeway in your choice here. Really anything can be made to look Rohan.
Blue or red for Dunlendings? I didn't think they'd be able to afford such expensive dyes. Blue particularly I can't associate with Dunlendings in my head but I'm willing to be proved wrong


And loving the horse plumes, they look great.

Actually, blue and red are cheap dyes unless I'm mistaken - that's why red was the colour of the Roman Empire and of the British army starting with the NMA. Blue is cheap aswell - it's indigo and purple that are expensive dyes - that's why Celtic Britons covered themselves in woad.

Thanks Can't really take credit for Thrydan's face as such - all it is is Chaos Black undercoat, a basecoat of Denheb stone and then a wash of Ogryn Flesh; virtually no skill required
