Good lord....

This is just plain ridiculous. I don't really know what else to say.

I used to try defend GW on their price hikes; they're a business, it's ultimately about profit, they have to shift price with the changing market, if more people bought direct from GW the prices would drop etc - but for crying out loud! Are they actually trying to make buying their products MORE difficult?

I don't think I can continue buying from GW - I've critisised a lot of people for making this move but I just don't think its feasible any more.

If GW were a person, I'd have punched them in the crotch already.

Have to agree with AW here. They are just taking the plain piss now, problem is, people still bought from them after the last price rise so they think they got away with it and so have tried it again.

Last time I could handle it, this time has pushed it too far for me, I hereby swear that I will never buy anything from GW again. You have it in writing guys.

PostSubject: Re: Price rise   Price rise EmptyWed May 12, 2010 7:40 am

I'm not an expert on economics, but I think the price rises only make sense if they are able to sustain the same level of customers, e.g. if they make £100 profit, a 10% rise will only reap £110 profit if their products are bought at the same rate. Unfortunately, the rise 'forces' (for lack of a better word) some people out of the hobby and reduces the spending of others (e.g. if someone has £10 to spendper month (the state most kids are in, who probably make up a good portion of their customer base), then they'll probably buy two blisters at £5 each, but at £6 each, then they'll buy one and go spend the spare £4 elsewhere). The only real profit a rise reaps is probably in the month between it being anounched and it going through where people panic buy to get things as cheep as possible.

I'm just glad a bad experience at GW Swansea last week has put me off setting foot in there again Rolling Eyes
I'll probably still buy GW stuff from time to time, but most likely only via online sellers who give discounts. The only GW products that I'll buy with any regularity are Black Library books - at least those are probably safe from price rises due to them having a lot of competition in that area and not wanting to risk pricing themselves out of the market (that said, makes you wonder how they can justify putting the price of army books/codicies/LotR supplements up - with the minis at least they can claim increases in metal prices and plastic prices, but with what are essentially books.... 🤷 )

They've just done too much to piss me off for me to let them off the hook again. They're getting no money from me anymore, the newer manager in my local store is an arse and this is what the 3rd price rise in a year? Absolute piss take to be completely honest. They are actually now my no.1 most hated company Wink

They must have replaced all the managers with arses, 'cause the same thing's happened to GW Swansea Sad

To be honest, they only minis I want at the moment off them are Duinhir and the Blackroot command, although to be honest I can probably convert them out of something else :/

It'll be a shame if GW goes down the tubes, but it's their own doing. Hopefully some of the old higher ups from when it was a decent company and whose leaving/firings are part of the downfall will snap up the rights to WH and 40k and keep on making them with a more reasonable mindset.

Last time I checked the good manager we had in Canterbury was being replaced by someone entirely new...looks like your 'arse theory' may be correct Razz

I certainly have a big enough backlog to keep myself busy without buying anything new but it'll still be a shame if GW ends up going under. Should it happen, someone else would doubtless arise to fill the gap in the market, but with LOTR support sagging we may see it lost entirely - at least until the Hobbit brings about some sort of revival.

I don't know if this is realistic but I'm half-hoping that GW will suddenly feel the repurcussions of their persistent and ridiculous price hikes and get hit hard enough for some sort of price plumet but not so hard as to put them out of business. However, I doubt something like this could happen without serious effects on more than just the prices.

Until something magic happens though, the fact of the matter is that it's just not worth buying from GW anymore. I can get everything they sell for the same or a lower price elsewhere, while cutting out the annoying (but apparently obligatory) sales pitches from staff. My loyalty to GW, through all previous price rises, however unreasonable, has reaped its reward - and I am not amused in the slightest. And so I second RC's pledge; although I withhold the right to withdraw from said contract should GW see sense in the future.

Hopefully they'll plummet enough for the ivestors/shareholders who are in it to make a quick buck lose interest and it'll be snapped up by someone/somepeople with both business sense anda 'by-gamers-for-gamers' attitude towards the company.

PostSubject: Re: Price rise   Price rise EmptyWed May 12, 2010 11:50 pm

Gah! I can't really pretend to be majorly surprised though, I've come to expect this type of thing from GW.
Well, that really puts a spanner in my plans for building some 40k armies and possibly dabbling in WotR. Will be interesting to see how the price changes carry over, as the prices are already out for different countries. I have a feeling though, that at least in the case of Tau, it's going to be a lot cheaper to buy the Forgeworld battlesuits than the GW ones Razz

I've invested too much in this hobby to quit, but I will definitely be dropping my spending significantly. Catch up on my backlog and only buy what I need (or really want to paint). Might have to look at buying the materials for my diorama quickly before they go up too much...

well atlast you guys have something to do. All i have are the 7 Rohan Royal guard to paint form the Build me an Army comp that fell thought(for the second time).
I also started to collect Nids a while ago and tho most nids avoided the price boost thanks to not even beeing 6 months old yet it did boost the Warriors and that what i really want for my army (they have NEVER been killed in a game!)

It's also about 30 mins long so make sure you have some time to spare.

Agreed with RC. While I will not be quitting the hobby, this will be the end of GW minis for me when I run out.

I'll be getting Reaper minis for D&D, miscellaneous minis for miscellaneous characters, and, should I wish to splurge, Privateer Press models, which, while pricey too, are bigger and more detailed, plus you only need four models to begin a game of Hordes and Warmachine.

Even so, that only applies if you only ever play in GW stores. If you're playing friendlies at a local club or a mates house, you can easily look for alternatives, even if you only play LotR and 40k. Unless they're twats, most people would probably be fine letting you use alternatives, plus there's always eBay - wouldn't be suprising if eBay will get flooded with GW stuff being sold by people giving up on the hobby in the near future.
