Citadel Guard Empty
PostSubject: Citadel Guard   Citadel Guard EmptyMon May 30, 2011 5:28 pm

So it's been a while since we've had a discussion ont he efectiveness of a unit. I was wondering what people think of the lowly Citadel Guard. Theming my Gondorian Feifdoms force, I'm looking to add elites, an elite guard which would be thematically either Citadel Guard or Axemen of Lossarnach.

Looking at my models I have a lot of WoMT archers which I'm not using, so I've been wondering about the effectiveness of the CG with longbow. In my case, I'm considering taking them as infantry with spear and longbow, or as cavalry with longbows (using KoMT and WoMT combined). What are the thoughts on these options?

Personally for me, I'm not really sure how much use they'd be thematically as I already have Rangers bringing bows to my force (granted they pack less strength, have less defence and less courage) and 6 KoDA for cavalry. I might just continue struggling to find a good halberd based warrior (WoMT were my first thought but their spears tend to have shields as well, CG and GotFC could potentially work except being metal they're hard to convert).

Well they are effectily braver warriors with aces to elf bows. They do good as ranged support but they can get expensive in large groups or as a small bodyguard force for your hero (spears are good) but Fountain Guard do that job much better (Better fighters and the possiblity of D7) Mounted version are good but converting is a problem with them and making them stand out enought. They would be good for an all mounted Gondor force asa that is the only option for real brave troops.

Aye, an all mounted Gondor force would be an interesting army to play! Devestating on the charge, but you'd rely a lot on heroes to help you later on with heroic actions and possibly banners to make sure you win the combats you need to. They're not that hard to convert mounted. Just use top half of a WoMT on a Knight. Both plastic. The bow is a give away that it's a CG and not a KoMT.

WoMT could also be played as either. Go all WoMT archers or all CG archers and then it's not hard for your opponent. But is it worth adding an extra point on each warrior to be able to support in combat?

Compared to Rangers, they're better against shield equipped High Elves (I play good v good as well with my mate) and shield equipped Uruks and other such heavy armour + shield equivalents. They're also more capable in combat. On the other hand, Rangers are more reliable with their shooting and will win out against Orcs and shieldless warriors.
