I thought Return of the King was the best myself (extended cut of course). This brought the meaning of an epic scale into the trilogy I felt...plus I think the music here's the best from all three films Smile

I preferred The Return of the King also, the Battle of the Pellenor fields was particularly amazing and the extended version makes it even better. The extended scene with Grond is pretty good too.

I'd have to go for FotR as for me it was the closest to the source material.

I say ROTK as it was made of epic parts. And the Charge of the Rohinum made me cry. Crying or Very sad

Just as with the (original) Star Wars saga, I think the second entry is the best. I've also noticed that Two Towers is the most watchable for my friends that aren't die-hard Tolkien fanatics. FotR and RotK both seem too long-winded for people who don't know the plot/watch everything with bated breath and always want more, more, MOOOORE!

The whole trilogy is great but I would choose the Return of the King as my favorite considering it encompasses all aspects of a movie that I like: humor, action, intrigue, suspense and a happy ending.

That's also the case with Empire Strikes Back, interestingly enough.

It'd probably be the same with most trillogies where theres an overall arc - the first film is fresh and new so draws in crowds, but has most of the exposition; the second film mainly draws fans rather than adverage joe because it doesn't explain as much due to most of the expostion having been in the first film; while the third film has something big and climatic in it so draws in crowds, but suffers from having to tie up all the loose ends from the first two films and its own.

I agree, which is why I think it's so strange that my non-Tolkien-fan friends like TT so much.

Strange, although I suppose your Tolkien-fan freinds have a downer on it due to the Elves at Helm's Deep Razz

My favorites probably the Two Towers as there's basically non-stop battles. Razz

what gets me are those few people who watched Fellowship and Return of the King but not Towers. Thyat jsut doesn't make sence. As for added stuff i'm fine with it. The army of the dead never fought at Pelnor fileds in the book (I belive as i haven't got that far) but did help capture the ships.

Favoutrite film has got to be FotR. It doesn't have the epic battles of the other two but I orefer the single linear storyline - IMO as soon as Frodo and Sam left on their own their journey got a little dull - TTT especially.

And seeing Hobbiton with the music to boot makes me want to cry every time.

True - Gollum gave it a breath of life, but IMO the the Sam/Frodo journey was the worst done aspect of the films.

Don't get me wrong, the Sam/Frodo story is still good and I do enjoy it but in comparison to the rest of the film(s) it seems to fall a little short of the mark

Really hard to say. I like bits from each of the films so it's hard to pick. The FotR was good, though I much prefer the second half once the actual fellowship is formed (it can be a little slow leading up to that). Leaning towards FotR, despite the epic battles but I'll conserve my vote for the minute.

i agree there. the first half of Fellowship was a little slow. Two towers sort of slept half way though and Return had a slow build up but massive pay of but Return is my fave as it is one few films that made me cry.....at the charge of the rohirum. I know i weird

J...j-jo...ke? What is this fantasticall thing you speak of?

I disagree on the point about the first half of FotR - I was actually very impressed with how PJ managed to convert the first few (rather univentful) chapters of the books into an interesting story on-screen. I love how dark and errie it gets after Bilbo's party; same with the book. As much as I love the fight scenes and battles - especially the charge of the Rohirrim - they aren't what made the films for me. And besides, I felt cheated out of Pellenor Fields by the Army of the Dead...
