Provided they keep Frodo in the prologue/Epilogue as a framing device (i.e. the Films are actually Bilbo telling Frodo stories), then his inclusion shouldn't be too annoying.

i think it will make sence as Frodo was about 50 at the time of the War so would be about 20 or so at this time. As long as they don't shoe horn him into more sences then it fine with me. any back as Gollum now that i have to applauid

Actually, he wasn't even alive at the time of TH. TH occurs 77 years before the War of the Ring, and taking into account the fact that the films ommited the 17 years between bilbo's 111th and Frodo leaving the Shire, it's still a 60 year gap, so regardless of whether the Frodo of the films is 50 (like in the books) or 33 (as he was at Bilbo's 11th in the books) he's still far too younge to be arround during TH (in fact, he wasn't even adopted by Bilbo until his late teens/early tweens anyway). Possibly if they can rope Sean Astin, Dominic Monahan and Billy Boyd back in we could get some nice scenes set in Rivendell where Bilbo and Gandalf are telling them the tale of TH as a framing device.

Actually, thinking about that, in the books, I think it says that Bilbo retold TH at the Council of Elrond, so maybe they could use that as a framing device and retcon Bilbo into the Council scenes when they do an anniverssay edition DVD of FotR Laughing

never thought of that. Having all told form flash back would be good...but it would runi it for non-hobbit readers that they "win" as they all ready know that bilbo lived

Assuming he's in good health, Sir Christopher Lee is set to reprise his role as Saruman. Just saying, but him, Ian McKellan, and Sylvester McCoy (who's playing Radagast) in the same scenes together will be made of nothing but awesomeness ^.^

I saw that Sir Christopher Lee was going to be returning as long as all is well last night (oh how I love the IMDb iPhone App). Great news indeed.

As for Frodo, looks like he'll be featured only in the opening sequences of both films, most likely as Bilbo is talking to him about the adventure as Dinadan suggested.

Excellent, it seems like the good news is just rolling in at the moment! Makes me reminiscent of the time where it was doubtful that a Hobbit film would ever see the light of day... Razz

Orlando Bloom is in again as Legolas and the titles for the movies are revealed: THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY and THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN.

It's good that they or Bloom back for legolas however i do belive he is never mentioned in the book so i would assume he would have a greatly reduced roll

True, but that's probably mainly due to him not being created until long after the book was written and it would probably have been too much effort to edit him in in a later edition especially as he wouldn't add anything to it really. Filmwise on the other hand, it's probably neccessary for him to be there - in the book he'd be present by implication (being Thranduil's son) and readers would imagine him being there in the background all along whereas in a film, they actually need someone there for him to appear in the background.

Barry Humphries will play the Goblin King, Evangeline Lilly a Woodland Elf named Tauriel. The latter doesn't appear in the book. Also Luke Evans cast as Bard, Benedict Cumberbatch voices Smaug.
