So this is an issue being debated in Britain at the moment. What are people's opinions on this system as opposed to the current First Past the Post system?

FPTP has a lot of flaws and while it may a ‘safe’ voting system; usually (but not always) guaranteeing a strong and stable government, I don’t think it promotes a healthy, progressive one. Personally, I’d much rather see a PR system than AV but I still prefer what’s being offered to FPTP.

Ultimately, if AV gets shot down here that’s any possibility of voting reform culled for at least a decade or two. At least if it passes the discussion will continue.

The biggest flaw that I can see with FPtP is that it can only truely work in a 2 party system. With three or more parties it usually wont be truely representative of the voters unless one party dominates the scene.

A result of this is that it can encourage tactical voting, e.g. in Britain, most people would see a vote for anyone who isn't Tory or Labour as a wasted vote and thus either A) don't bother voting, B) vote for their favourite out of Labour and Conservative or C) vote for the one they don't hate/hate the least just to snub the other one. That's not to say AV makes tacticle voting impossible, but it will soften it as people will be encouraged to vote for the party they really want.

In the last election there where only 2,000 vote between Conservitve, Labor and Lib Dems in that order. Laber and Comservites got a massive amount of seats. Lib Dems got next to none. That isn't fiar voting.

The new voting gets rid of tactical voting as well (mostly) and is a far more equal system for other parties....which is why Cameron is fighting it as he will lose out if the change goes a head and Cleg probbaly only agreed to the coalition to get the voting changed.
